Signs Your Chimney Needs Repairing
Regular chimney servicing will help keep your chimney looking great and working well, too. However, many homeowners discover that their new home hasn’t had any chimney service recently and that means it may need more than just maintenance. How do you know if your chimney requires more? Let’s take a look.
This problem is referred to as spalling bricks and it happens when moisture inside the chimney’s masonry causes the mortar and bricks to expand and then contract as it dries out. This results in damaged bricks and they will eventually crack or shift. You may also notice flaking from the bricks. If caught early, you just need to prevent moisture from getting into the masonry. However, if left too long, the bricks will need replacing.
Damaged Chimney Crown
The crown of the chimney is to prevent moisture from getting inside. If it’s damaged, then rain and snow can get in and cause further damage. Most people will never know their crown is cracked because they don’t get up on the roof to check it and the damage is only visible once you’re standing over it. Regular maintenance will ensure the problem is caught before it’s a serious problem.
Efflorescence or White Crystals
Any time you see white salt deposits on bricks, stone, or concrete, it shows that there is moisture getting into the space. In this case, if you see it happening on your chimney, it likely means there is loose flashing or something similar that is allowing moisture to get into your chimney. The efflorescence is not dangerous on its own but is a sign of things not being right.
Water in the Fireplace
As soon as you notice water in the fireplace, you need to get the chimney repaired. Drips or puddles in the fireplace indicate that something is not doing its job to keep out the water and that will need to be checked and repaired.
Most of the time, you won’t notice if you have a rust problem until it’s too late. Rust can show up in the chimney flashing, chimney cap, firebox, or in your damper or flue. Since these tend to be areas you can’t see properly, you need to inspect them annually. Otherwise, you’ll only notice there’s an issue when something goes wrong, such as the damper not working properly.
There are a myriad of things that can go wrong with your chimney and often, the problem isn’t noticeable until severe damage has been done. It’s essential that you have your chimney regularly serviced to ensure it’s always in excellent condition. Repairing issues before they’re a problem will save you a lot of money and hassle over time.
